I meant to post this earlier this week but totally forgot! Thank you to my mom for texting me this morning to remind me! You all probably know this already as I’m assuming you received a baggy in your mailbox like I did last week – but if you don’t know, tomorrow, Saturday, May 14th is Stamp Out Hunger day. There will be a Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive and it is SIMPLE to participate. All you need to do is place your non-perishables in a bag and then leave the bag at your mailbox! Your letter carrier will then deliver the food to a local food pantry! Go HERE for more info.
**Remember all of the Yakisoba noodles I got free at Publix earlier today? They would be an awesome donation and I’m putting them right back into my Publix bags along with some other non-perishables to leave outside tomorrow.
Love this drive! Liza, a group from our church (Calvary) then goes over to the Salvation Army Joy Center to help sort the groceries the mail carriers donate! What a rewarding experience! My 3 kids love it!
I went and got 7 bags to donate today. I have a question this drive is about hunger but do you think you can donate soap and personal care items also?
Yes, you can donate anything. I am also placing cat food in my bag. My husband is a letter carrier and works really hard at this food drive. Remember that all of the food goes to YOUR local food banks. So donate because it could be a neighbor that will be helped this year and next year it could be any one of us.
Thank you Mary. I put some cat treats in the bags. I forgot about our furry friends. I kinda feel bag for my letter carrier right now.
Just thought I’d take a moment to thank all of you who donated food during today’s mail carrier drive. I work at the local food bank where I live. Our small non profit with only 4 full time paid staff, services an entire 79 square mile county with approximately 56,000 people. On average we hand out 15-20 food orders every day. There is a lot of math involved but we go through a LOT of food over the course of a month and indeed year over year.
We are only able to do this through the support of the local community through food drives such as this. I only work 2 Saturdays a year and today is one. We started receiving the mail carrier food at 12:00 PM today and we didn’t stop getting trucks until 6:30 PM. We will eventually count every item donated but I can tell you we got a huge amount of food today which we rough sorted through. It was very exciting to see this stuff come in and knowing that we will be able to fully stock our shelves again for the 1st time in 3 months.
So again thank you all.
Liza, thank you so much for sharing this with your generous readers! – Marsha
