Day four Breakfast Fruit juice ingredients
Day Four Breakfast Juice
So – I haven’t posted any “personal” posts lately and I thought it was time. I’ve posted on Addicted to Saving’s Facebook page and on Addicted to Saving that I bought a juicer. And I have been asking for juice recipes. You all were wonderful sharing fun recipes with me. I ended up deciding to follow the Reboot method of juicing after watching the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Deal. (It is on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video – in fact, if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch the video free.) My husband and I watched the documentary together and found it to be extremely interesting. Beyond being interesting, however, it was really motivational. While I don’t have hundreds of pounds to lose, I was motivated by to try a cleanse to detox my body from as many impurities as possible and to see if it could cure some of my ailments. AND I would love to finish my 10 day cleanse with some of my cravings for junk food gone. My goal and utmost hope is that after this cleanse, I will continue juicing every morning for breakfast, eat a larger lunch and then eat a healthy dinner consisting mostly of vegetables (probably salad). We’ll see!
So I am on day 4. From what I have read and from watching the documentary, everyone has said that the first 3 days are hell. Thus far, I’ve found day two through today to be hell! Here’s my recap of my first few days:
Day one: Not too bad. I’m excited about the juice cleanse! I’m excited to use my new juicer. I’m excited to see how my health benefits from this juice cleanse. My breakfast juice was delicious with fresh fruits. My lunch juice was not good with Kale – but did I tell you I was excited? Dinner juice didn’t happen. We met our church Life Group at Panera and I was not dedicated to juicing enough to bring my dinner. So, I had a bowl of bean soup (they didn’t have vegetable soup that night :(). Didn’t have any bread. No soda. All in all, this was a great day!
Day two: I ran 6 miles that morning. Maybe not wise. Marvelous fruit juice for breakfast. Green juice for lunch which had too much kale. Remember how excited I was yestereday about the juice cleanse? Well, I am no longer excited. Afternoon – Experience a ginormous headache. (Oh – did I say that while doing a juice cleanse you are supposed to stop drinking everything except water? And that includes my beloved COFFEE.) So, with my coffee withdrawal I had a headache that would rival any migraine or hangover. So, for dinner, my will power lacked as I dealt with the shakes and my headache. I ended up cheating and ate raw cashew and a couple of servings of Kashi Crackers. I figured that if I was going to cheat on my cleanse, I should at least eat raw nuts for the protein (and zero salt or preservatives) and Kashi crackers (because Kashi is healthy for us right?!) Went to bed feeling a little discouraged and yet at the same time my headache was feeling much better.
Day three: Woke up headache free. Made Marvelous fruit juice for breakfast. For lunch, I decided to take a break from kale and used a spinach and beet based juice. My lunch juice wasn’t the best mainly because I used way too much lemon. So all afternoon I tasted beets and lemons. Late afternoon Jeff kindly pointed out that I had been talking about food for about an hour. (Yes – this cleanse has reminded me that I am addicted to food.) At that point, I made a dinner juice that wasn’t so bad. More spinach and this time a whole carton of blueberries and a half of a cucumber. Very doable. Let me tell you what I noticed on Day three. I noticed that ALL of the junk emails I get from restaurants, ALL of the food commercials on TV and most all of the recipes I saw online via Facebook or Pinterest were unhealthy foods. And it frustrated me. It frustrated me because it tempted me BIG TIME. But it also frustrated me because I know that for some people, this is all they eat all the time. Prior to my juice cleanse, I ate somewhat “healthy”. I had a couple of servings of vegetables a day. But I also greatly enjoyed my carbs – oh the mere thought of carbs make my mouth water. My portions were out of wack. Yesterday I also spent a lot of time viewing recipes for different breads (cranberry bread, apple cinnamon monkey bread, etc) in anticipation for getting off of my cleanse. My hope, however, is that once I start bringing in other foods, I will eat less processed foods, bake more from scratch and still eat loads of fruits and vegetables!
Day four (today): I am so weak today. Supposedly from juicing you should start to experience mental clarity. Well, I’m not clear at all mentally. In fact, if anything, my brain is extremely fuzzy today. And I’m tired. I’m trying to decide whether I should work out or not today.. I made the best breakfast juice thus far. Probably because I used fruits that cost lots of $$$. (see my picture above) But I’m trying to really use fruits and vegetables that have all different colors so that I can get as many nutrients in me as possible. I did weigh myself this morning and I have lost weight. But again, I’m not focused on that. I really want to detox. For lunch, Jeff made our juice. It wasn’t that bad. Our lunch juice had some vitamin packed veggies like kale, red cabbage and carrots. Below is the picture of the vegetables before juicing and then end result.
I will keep you posted on my progress for the rest of the week. Have you done a juice cleanse/fast? Would love to hear how your cleanse/fast went, how long it was, end results, your thoughts, etc!

I am on day 3 of my first juice fast 🙂 I also was inspired by watching the documentary a few weeks ago. My main goal is to lose weight at this point though. I think I feel worst so far today, so hopefully that mental clarity will chime in tomorrow! lol I’ve been a very good girl and haven’t cheated (well okay one piece of gum but is that really that bad.. lol). My real temptations will start when I work this weekend & see and smell everyone elses foods 🙂 lol I started with a simple goal of one week… I really want to go longer but I figured that will be my bare minimum 🙂 Keep up the good work & I enjoy reading your progress 🙂

Hi Nicole! Great job on your juice fast! How many days are you planning on doing your juice fast?
Jenn says
You are an athlete and you need carbs to fuel your body. I know you are aware of that fact. If you are completely dedicated to this juicing cleanse than I would not workout for the duration. It’s just going to make you feel even worse. Good luck!

I watched the movie “FOOD MATTERS”, thought that was an eye opening movie; would recommend seeing that one too. My husband and I were seriously considering buying the NinJa 1100 watt blender. It juices and does so much more, like make homemade ice cream with frozen fruit and cream. What make juicer do you have, Liza?
Addicted to Saving says
Hi Wendy! I definitely do not have a top of the line juicer. I have a Waring Juicer. I have heard good things about Breville Juicers as well as Jack LaLane (spelling?) juicers. I probably wouldn’t recommend you get it because it is not top of the line or even a brand that many people have heard of. I got a good deal on it and decided to put my money towards buying produce versus a juicer. 😉

Wow! You are a brave soul! I wish you the best of luck and when you get discouraged, think about how you being healthy is a gift to your family! God Bless!

After watching that documentary last year we went out and bought a Breville juicer and started juicing. I couldn’t make it on just juice (I felt like crap and w/ 4 kids to take care of couldn’t do it). I plan to start again this summer when fruit prices are more affordable. I won’t juice every meal because I’m expecting baby #5 but will do lots more juicing and include the kids in it too. They don’t really like the taste but I’ll try the cups with lids on it so maybe they won’t smell the juice so much =)

My Uncle would KILL me if he knew I was telling his story but we will keep it among friends! He was VERY overweight and watched the same documentary you did. He is currently on day 76 of a PURE JUICE diet and OFF ALL 11 Prescription meds! Not to mention down about 90 lbs – probably more by now. I wanted to share his story in hopes that it will motivate others. We’re Italian and man do we love to eat…PASTA! He has proven that it can be done and if you have the proper mind set you will succeed. Once he’s down to a proper weight (determined by his doctor) he goes on the raw diet part. Apparently after you ‘reboot’ your system you have to ease back into foods and can’t just jump back into what you used to eat. I have watched the documentary but I have not yet found this willpower to succeed. I know where I am and I know that my current state of depression will eventually win so I will wait till I can get out of this rut and GO FOR IT! Till then, take it one day at a time, ohh and even though you don’t like Kale – that’s the “mean green” and you can kill it with garlic and celery! (LOTS) It’s the one thing that makes this properly work, or so I’m told.

as you know by now Im half Egyptian..All my life Ive been over weight, I guess I got my moms side of the families genes..I lived in Egypt for 8 years and I was my healthiest ever when I got married and when I had my baby girl. In Egypt we eat a health protien filled breakfast which is fava beans with evoo and tomatoes and onions and spices, eggs, feta cheese or falfel… Then lunch is what we Americans call dinner, there lunch is what we would do for dinner a carb a vegetable and a meat. Egypt healthy food is sooooo accessible no mean goes with out a salad…When I was pregnant my doctor advised me pomegranates I would eat them like crazy and we had lots of nuts there too. Then for dinner we would have light stuff like some cheese and bread or an egg or thahini with molases…The common theme is all food needs to be natural..Yup they fry things there too but we use the best olive oil or clarified butter.
Needless today my return to America (which I cant stand being away from home. I heart my freedom!!!) was not easy I gained about 80 pounds I mangaged to keep off in Egypt which now I developed something called pcos and cant get pregnant. Im really motivated to try a juice cleanse but to me I have to feel balanced so I like the idea of you snacking on nuts!
Ok so to sum up my rambling what I mean is maybe there is something to having a larger lunch and a light dinner.

Hi Yasmina! I knew you were half Egyptian but didn’t know that you lived in Egypt for 8 years! How awesome. I have heard many nutritionists recommend eating the “large” meal of the day at lunchtime. I know that my husband and I are going to try to do that once the cleanse is over. And once the cleanse is over, my goal is to have fresh juice for breakfast (with fruits and veggies), a nice lunch and then a light dinner – much like you mentioned. I’ve eaten super healthy before (specifically about 4 years ago) but with time, old habits crept back in. So, I’m hoping this cleanse will detox me and also get my body used to eating primarily healthy foods again. I am definitely not a juice cleanse expert but the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead talks a lot about the health benefits of cleansing. (Not just weight loss but autoimmune diseases going away, going off meds, etc.) So maybe it would help your pcos? I have a few ailments that I’m hoping this cleanse can start getting rid of 🙂
P.S. I just learned this healthy recipe for roasted chickpeas. Basically toss the chickpeas in olive oil, salt and cayenne and then roast. I haven’t tried it yet but plan on trying it after this cleanse is over. Have you made it before?
Yasmina says
Yes a lot of veterinarians and Egyptians love love love chick peas. I havent roasted them myself but I guess you would have to boil them first. We make this comfort food with chick pea in the winter its more like a soup but its served in a cup with a spoon.
Bag of chick peas soaked and drained. Fill a pot with water add the chick peas one whole peeled onion two cloves of garlic, salt, pepper, cyanne pepper, cumin and a dash of coriander let it boil till peas are tender. Season to taste. When done serve with lemon and more hot pepper as desired. Its soo comforting but healthy at the same time it just has a little salt in it.
I make side dishes with chick peas all the time just add a chopped tomato and spices and thats it. I’ve learned that when you use decent spices and a variety you wind up cutting down on salt as you start to like the flavors of the spices the salt just compliments it.
Also Egyptians dont use salad dressing what they use is a good evoo salt pepper cumin and a dash of lemon or vinegar..There is a spice called Sumac which is lemony some people just sprinkle that on a salad with no oil or nothing and its pretty good..Im thinking Im going to start small and work my way up. Im going to try with a juice for breakfast!!
Definitely have to start somewhere minus well be now!!!
Addicted to Saving says
Yum! I’m going to try your chick pea comfort food recipe 🙂 Do you mash any of the peas in there to make the “soup” thicker?
It’s interesting because in Italy, they don’t use much dressing either. They just use high quality EVOO & Balsamic Vinegar. Jeff and I love that. But here we often get sidetracked and use bottled dressing (I don’t like creamy dressing but I will use bottled Balsamic Italian Dressing). After this juice fast, I’m going to go back to EVOO & Balsamic for dressing. Just a little goes a long way. And I also love EVOO and lemon! So good.
Yasmina says
nope they dont mash it because they like to sip the broth but I guess it wouldn’t hurt!!
Yasmina says
I forgot that you add a whole tomato to the pot too I emailed you the recipe.
Addicted to Saving says
Got it. Thank you so much Yasmina! (I responded to your email)

Wow! I am really impressed! I watched the documentary too but have not done the cleanse. I do know how you could save a lot of money on your fruits and veggies, though. I have a hydroponic garden that grows fantastic greens and strawberries and watermelon on my back porch (in Deltona, FL) and I have a YouTube video of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21_vj5dASOk&context=C483300eADvjVQa1PpcFNqQCZgXyAT0BeAK50JXTvhwJ9yf1GOd70=

Thanks for the post! I just completed a ten day Master Cleanse~lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper with water, so your post was so timely. I watch the documentary last night, and was a BB& B at 9 AM to buy my juicer!!! It is being shipped, they were out and said they can’t keep them in stock!!! I am amazed how much time is freed up when you don’t obsess about food. I lost 11 pounds on the ten day cleanse, but more importantly I feel amazing and kicked my caffeine addiction. I also am a runner and it is so much easier to run faster as you get lighter, defying physics!!!! Best wishes to y and keep posting.
Addicted to Saving says
Thanks for the comment Marcia! I’m really struggling with this cleanse! I love vegetables. Love them. But I can’t handle them in juice. My husband, on the other hand, is loving all of the juices including the ones we are making with kale. I’m super weak and have no energy at all to run. I am wondering if I am not drinking enough. Tonight I cheated (for the second time) and had raw cashews and kashi crackers just to settle my body. Awesome job on your weight loss. You have inspired me! Tomorrow is day 6 for me. Day 9 is Easter and I’m giving myself a cheat meal. Then, I’m looking forward to day 11 when I will start bringing salads and regular food into my diet 🙂
Marcia says
I think your body just needs to adjust, it is part of the detox. Once you get rid of the toxins, you will have more energy and feel better. I don’t know if you should run on a detox, I know with the ten day cleanse I did, they rec taking it easy during the time since your body is busy detoxing and adjusting. Just thought I would share that with you so you can relax and enjoy your amazing healing process!! Keep with it, you will be glad you did.
Candice Storm says
I was wondering. I have watched the film and bought a juicer, but can’t ever seem to pull up the diet online. It takes forever to download…..did this happen to you?
