Okay, when I mention the words “baking soda,” how may of you are jumping-out-of your-seat excited to hear more? Thought so. But before you scroll down to the next post, stick around and see if you don’t find some interesting new facts about using baking soda in the home – it could save you big bucks.
I don’t know about you, but we typically just use it for baking. My husband likes to tell the story of when he tried to bake cornbread as a 10 year old without parental supervision. He liked baked goods, and he enjoyed soda, so wouldn’t tripling the amount of baking soda called for in the recipe make it three times as good? Yep, you know how that turned out. So I’ll throw in a teaspoon of baking soda in breads and cookies, whatever the recipe calls for, but I’m pretty unadventurous with it. Every once in a while I’ll lightly cover my toothpaste in baking soda to get a really good clean. But other than that, it just sits at the back of my fridge soaking in the leftover smells that are hiding in the back.
One of the challenges we have in our house is puppy tinkles. Another is big doggy throw-ups. And still another is old-cat hairballs. Not to mention the litter box! We love our animals, but they can make our house a little stinky sometimes.
So what we’ve decided to really tackle this issue and start using Arm & Hammer Baking Soda in a couple of different areas. Why will we be testing it out? Because we need to get a handle on these pet smells! And because it’s natural, Arm & Hammer Baking Soda is safe to use on food surfaces and around children and pets.
Here are a couple of things we’re going to try:
1) First off, we’re going to clean up our potty mishaps from puppy with Arm & Hammer baking soda, scrubbing in gently with warm water. We can also sprinkle it on the accident area and vacuum up when dry to control the odor.
2) Another great idea is to add Arm & Hammer baking soda to a vacuum bag to fight smells there – I have been noticing this lately and never thought to sprinkle some baking soda into the bag, which helps regulate pH and reacts with odors to neutralize and eliminate them.
3) We’re also going to try making our own carpet freshener! Here’s how: Combine 1 cup of crushed, dried herbs (rosemary, southernwood, lavender, whatever you have) with 1 teaspoon of ground cloves, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of Arm & Hammer baking soda. Stir until mixed. Then sprinkle over carpet and allow to sit for 5 minutes. Then vacuum it up!
4) We have one drain that tends to get clogged, so I’m going to prevent it from getting any worse by doing the following: Pour 1/2 cup of Arm & Hammer baking soda down the drain. Then follow it up with 1 cup of vinegar. Once the foaming subsides, then just rinse with hot water! And here we’ve been spending all this money on Drano and other expensive products.
These are just a couple I’m going to try in the next couple weeks, and I’ll be back to let you know how it went. Hey, if I can save money and use just one product versus multiple ones, I’m all for it!
