I’ve grown up using Dawn Dish Soap.  My mom always used it to wash dishes and some of my earliest memories are of myself begging my mom to let me “help her wash the dishes.” (Help actually meant that I would play with the bubbles and foam… but don’t all little kids want to do that? ) I always loved the fresh scent and foamy bubbles I could create as I helped wash dishes. At my own house, we’ve never had to deal with anything as horrific as oil spills but I have used Dawn dish soap to bathe my dog when he had issues with fleas! I love Dawn because it can be used for some many things. As I mentioned above, we’ve used it to bathe our dog when he had fleas. I also like

to use it to clean other parts of my house besides just the dishes in my kitchen sink.

1) Multi-Purpose Cleaner
When I want to clean our tile floors, I will add just two drops of Dawn to 8 ounces of water in a spray bottle. This spray mixture can also be used to clean bathroom and kitchen counters, sinks, and even toilets! I love this cleaner because just a little bit of Dawn goes a long way.

2) Bathroom Cleaner
Dawn is the perfect bathroom cleaner when you mix it with white vinegar. To make this mixture, heat vinegar in the microwave until it is hot and fill half of a spray bottle the vinegar. Fill the rest of the bottle with Dawn. Put the lid on and shake to mix well. To clean, spray the bathroom cleaner on the bathroom sink, tub, tile around the tub and toilet. Let it sit for a few minutes and then scrub away with a sponge. Rinse the area with water and you will have a sparkling clean bathroom.

3) Window Cleaner
I never knew that I could use Dawn as a window cleaner until I saw a recipe from Merry Maids. Take a gallon of water and mix in 3 drops of Dawn. Fill a spray bottle with the solution and then wash your windows as you normally would.

Working from home as a full-time blogger, I feel like if I’m not parenting my 2 ½ year old and 4 ½ year old, I’m working on my laptop. If I’m not on my laptop, I’m multitasking cooking, cleaning, driving my son to school while simultaneously checking my phone or tablet for work related emails (not while driving of course).

When I was given the opportunity to try out the new Nextbook Flexx 11A 2-in-1 tablet with Windows 10 AND give one away to a lucky reader, I jumped on it. First, I love the price point of this tablet. I wanted to test out this tablet and see if this tablet would allow me to work both home and while I’m on the road. I also wanted to see if this tablet would be family friendly and if my kiddos can use it while on roadtrips. My children don’t use tablets much but when we are on longer roadtrips, it’s a treat for them to watch movies on their tablet. I was curious if this Nextbook Flexx 11A 2-in-1 tablet would meet all of our needs.

Setting up the Nextbook Flexx 11A was a breeze. I had to charge it and then once turning it on, the screen gave me both audio and visual instructions on how to set it up. Within less than a few minutes, I was ready to use the tablet. Setting up Wi-Fi was a breeze as the introductory instructions walked me that process as well.

One of the first things I noticed when holding the Nextbook Flexx 11A is that it is lightweight. It is less than 3 pounds. It has Windows 10 and has a pogo keyboard. You can use the keyboard attached to the tablet like a laptop – or you can remove the tablet from the laptop and hold just the tablet using the screen as a touchscreen. It has a large 11.6” screen, 16:0 aspect ratio and 1366 x 768 resolutions (IPS). The Flexx 11A includes USB 2.0, microUSB 2.0, and microHDMI ports as well as a headphone jack. It has front and back cameras; music player; popular media formats; and up to eight hours battery run time.

The Nextbook Flexx 11A is perfect for all family members. I love the fact that I am able log into wordpress and work on my blog, use Microsoft word to type up documents and use Facebook to work my blog’s Facebook page. Using the Flexx 11A, I was able to work from home, while waiting in the car line at my son’s school and while using WiFi at local coffeeshops.

As a family, we have enjoyed using Flexx 11A as a tablet to listen to music and watch shows and movies on Hulu & Netflix. My kids are still too young to use social media and play many games but as they get older, this tablet will allow them to do this. We went on a two hour roundtrip roadtrip and the Flexx 11A kept my kiddos occupied as they watched a movie using just the tablet screen.

The Nextbook Flexx 11A has easy access to the Windows Store where you can download free apps and paid apps. Windows Store gives access to countless apps including music, movies, TV shows, books, games, and reference and educational materials. And if you are traveling with your tablet, the Windows Store can provide access to current and Microsoft legacy business apps, including the popular Microsoft Office suite of applications. It comes with 64GB of internal memory and you can add another 64GB with its microSD card slot so there is plenty of memory available.

Once the weather starts getting warmer, I begin going through the closets of my kiddos and remove their cold weather clothing and any clothing that I see is worn out or getting snug. These shoes are the best because they look good with literally any outfit AND they are comfortable in the hot Florida heat.

Knowing how much my daughter loves flowy dresses, I dressed her in the OshKosh B’gosh Plaid Ruffle Dress. The dress is made with yarn-dyed plaid and has the most darling flutter sleeves. The back of the dress is just as attractive as the front and has crisscross ruffles. For my daughter’s shoes, she’s wearing Gladiator Sandals. These shoes are soft and very easy to put on. There is a zipper at the heel of the shoes making them easy to put on and take off!

With winter almost over, are you starting to grill out more and more? Being fortunate enough to live in Florida, I enjoy grilling in mild weather year-round. But I can also remember grilling year-round when we lived in a suburb of Chicago. We love grilling out – even when the weather was frigid cold in Illinois. One of our favorite foods to grill are Johnsonville Brats and Sausage.

I have to admit, living in Florida, we are spoiled with very nice weather during the fall and winter. In fact, it’s my favorite time of the year once the weather gets cooler! One of the main challenges I am faced with each year is finding holiday outfits for my children that matches the warmer Florida weather while also being Christmasy. It’s tricky! For my son, I wanted to get him a pair of cute jeans. I found these adorable Patchwork Jeans. To go along with his jeans, I selected the 2-Pocket Plaid Button-Front Shirt. The shirt is a lightweight twill flannel. I knew that I could roll up his sleeves on warmer days or layer it with a vest or jacket on cooler days. I was thrilled with the quality of his outfit. I would be happy because I would have veggies on my pizza, hubby would have lots of pepperoni on his pizza and the kiddos would have their mac & cheese. Perfection.

This was an easy meal night. The most effort I had to put into preparing our meal was preheating the oven, opening the packages and then serving the food. So easy,

My husband loved the Triple Pepperoni Pizza. He said it was easily one of his new favorite frozen pizzas (he’s a frozen pizza connoisseur). This pizza was so flavorful especially considering it was packed with pepperoni! I thought the Supreme Pizza was great – it was generously layered with meat and vegetable toppings. I love a combo of meat and veggies and this satisfied my pizza cravings!

The Bacon Mac n Cheese was perfectly creamy and the addition of smoked bacon created the perfect flavor combinations of cheese, noodles and bacon. It was a hit with my kids and they asked for seconds.

And then of course the dessert… The Peanut Butter Truffle Brownie had a wonderfully fresh consistency and the frosting topping was smooth and creamy. The size of this brownie is huge and we easily split this four ways to share it. The Pecan Caramel Brownie Cookies were also wonderful. They were soft cookies and the caramel melted in our mouths.

My son started preschool last week. This is his first time going to school and I’m going to admit, I was a nervous wreck on his first day and I’m still a nervous wreck even now. (And, he’s only going two mornings a week! What am I going to be like once he’s in school 5 days a week – eek!) He has lunch at school and I’ve been having a fun time putting together his lunches. The only tricky thing for me is that he is on a special diet. A lot of regular lunch items (bread, pouches, crackers, cookies, yogurts) have to be very specific brands. (We are following the Feingold Diet.) We are only a couple of weeks into it and I am by no means an expert but I have found some easy foods that my son likes AND they are so tasty he doesn’t even realize he’s on a special meal plan. Win!

I decided to send my son to school with cheese quesadillas, rice and beans, fresh kiwi and fresh banana. (I WISH I could send him to school with veggies but unfortunately, he is in a stage where he doesn’t like and vegetables at all. Thank goodness we can sneak them in smoothies!) I already had tortillas and cheese at home but while at Save-A-Lot I bought the fruit, rice and beans.

Once home I made enough food for my daughter’s lunch and my son’s school lunch. If you have never made quesadillas, they are so easy to make. In fact, I basically copy the steps of making a grilled cheese. My son isn’t into fancy quesadilla flavors so I kept them simple and just made cheese. However, if your child is more adventurous, you could very easily put leftover chicken, beef and even veggies into your quesadilla!

Once I cooked the quesadilla, I let it cool before cutting. I then cut it into triangles and placed the wedges into a container. I then put the rice and beans into a separate container and the cut kiwi into another container.

This school lunch was a hit! And as you can see from the picture below, my daughter loved it too!

Most of you know that we are in the midst of adopting a 17 month old little girl. In preparation, I’ve been trying to save as much money as possible and either buy things second-hand or reuse the toys and furniture that we already have in our house. At some point, I had the idea of repainting our dresser and using it in our daughter’s nursery. Our dresser was handed down to me and it has been well-used by us these past 10 years. While the large size of the dresser may be a bit unconventional for a nursery, I love that I can store lots of clothing, diapers and wipes in it AND that it is wide enough for me to use as a changing table.

I’m not a crafty person. So the first thing I did, before tackling this project, was ask my friends on Facebook what chalk paint brands they recommend, if they had any tips and just how hard this project would in fact be. I don’t have a ton of free time so I was worried this project was going to be more than I bargained for!

I received lots of feedback. Some friends told me they spent time sanding the furniture prior to painting. Other friends told me they love chalk paint because it is user friendly. And some even said that they prefer regular paint. Then, my friend Kim from Cocoon Vintage Studio messaged me and said that she would come to my house and help me paint my dresser. And, she introduced me to her favorite brand of Chalk Paint, Dixie Belle Paint Company. I told Kim I wanted to paint my dresser white and she came to my house armed with all of the painting supplies including Dixie Belle Fluff Paint (that is the color white I wanted).

To prepare for this painting adventure, I had to do two things that took a total of 5 minutes. I had to clean my dresser with soap and water (I actually used my Thieves Cleaner to clean it) and then I had to remove the knobs. Easy.

Originally I was going to move my dresser to my garage (or maybe even our lanai) to paint it. But when I learned the paint was fumeless, I decided instead to move it to a large open space in our living room. My husband has painting tarps so we placed the dresser on a tarp.

When my friend arrived, I drilled her again making sure we didn’t need to sand the dresser prior to painting. She reassured me we didn’t need to and within a few minutes we were painting. So, one thing I did learn – the lighter the paint color, the more coats you will need to paint. So, be prepared – if you choose a light color like white, you will have to do multiple coats. (I never would have predicted this.. but remember, I am not a DIY person ) The other thing I learned is that my dresser’s drawers do not come out (except for the bottom right drawer which is broken). This made painting much more difficult. But it was still doable.

We painted using a regular painter’s paint brush. We watered the chalk paint down with a spray bottle with water occasionally spraying our paint brushes. I would ask my friend (every few minutes) if I was doing okay and she would reaffirm that there was really no way for me to mess this project up.

After we painted 3 coats and the dresser was a solid white, we used very light sandpaper (220) to sand the entire dresser making it nice and smooth to the touch. Then we used black brushes to apply Dixie Belle Clear Coat Satin Finish to the dresser. Once we were done, all I had to do was let the dresser dry!

Let me tell you, I am in awe of how easy this project was! For two people, it took us 3 hours to tackle this project. And it would have gone much quicker if I chose a darker color. I’m also amazed by how far the paint went. I barely used any paint. The 32 oz containers you see in the picture above would cover LOTS of furniture. I’m already thinking about my next project. I purchased a beat up Eddie Bauer high chair and I’m thinking about painting it in Dixie Belle’s “Limeade.”  My kitchen is a mixture of light cabinets and dark cabinets and I think the fun yellow/green color would go great!

Most of you know that we adopted our son when he was 10 months old. When he first came home, I had only the bare necessities and yet I didn’t have one of the most important baby supplies… a baby monitor. We set up our two Astra 2 Cameras in my son’s room. One camera is on the wall in front of his crib (so that we can watch him sleep) and the second camera is on my son’s bookshelf (so that we can watch my son if he is playing in his room). It took us less than 5 minutes to install the cameras and test out the video monitor. The video monitor has a 3.5” screen which is a great size! The cameras pan left and right, tilt and zoom. The cameras also have a Talk to Baby intercom which lets you communicate with your child directly from your video monitor. And this is one of my favorite features – the battery life is up to 48 hours when you have your monitor in power save mode!

As a full-time blogger, and mom (to a busy 3 year old), I struggle with working and parenting at the same time. Honestly, it just doesn’t happen much unless my son is sitting to watch Daniel Tiger or Thomas the Train. I love that with this camera and monitor, I am able to peek and check on my son if he does go to play in his room. I don’t like him to be out of my sight (at the age of 3, he loves to get into stuff he shouldn’t) so this system allows me to get a few minutes of work done while at the same time watching his every move. When I did research on this camera and monitor, I learned that it has ClearVu digital wireless technology which means they are secure against hackers. This is important to me as I’ve heard horror stories about video monitor systems being hacked into.

The keyboard is smaller than many typical laptop keyboards but the keys were still large enough that I was able to type quickly without any typos.

Above is a picture of the  Nextbook Flexx 10 2-in-1 Windows 10 Tablet after I detached the keyboard. You can see that the keyboard appears on the actual tablet and the buttons are nice and easy to type on.

One of the common concerns I hear from readers about tablets is that they won’t be able to read their Kindle books on it. With the  Nextbook Flexx 10 2-in-1 Windows 10 Tablet you can download the Kindle app (it took me about 20 seconds to download) and then immediately have access to all of your Kindle books.

As I’ve been testing this tablet out, I’ve loved using it just to browse the internet. So I enjoyed relaxing and reading non-frugal related articles on the internet with it!

After browsing the internet a bit, I downloaded the Netflix app to check out the video quality. While my picture above doesn’t do it justice (it’s tricky to take pictures of screens without seeing yourself in the reflection), the upload speed was fast for Netflix and I was very quickly able to submerge myself in a cheesy and yet heart-felt Christmas movie.

So what are my thoughts? I have only used this  Nextbook Flexx 10 2-in-1 Windows 10 Tablet for about 5 days now but I love it. I can blog on it and they keyboard is extremely friendly for people like me who type really fast. From a blogging standpoint, most tablets I am unable to actually work on. While I may be able to respond to emails or approve a comment here or there, I can’t blog. With this, I can easily navigate through wordpress and blog. The size and weight of this tablet are perfect to fit in my purse and I love knowing that I can work while out and about!

When you cook with Italian sauces, do you have a favorite sauce that you cook with? For us, we love Ragu Traditional Sauce. Ragu is an authentic Italian sauce with richer taste, aroma and texture than most other brands because it’s made the traditional way and with the same standards set by Assunta in 1937. Instead of using shortcuts, Ragu follows Assunta’s secret family recipe slow-simmering vine-ripened tomatoes, garlic, and fragrant herbs. I use Ragu sauce over noodles, in lasagna, in slow cooker meals and even in new recipes that I concoct. While I don’t have a lot of time in the kitchen, I love to put together a wonderful meal that my family can enjoy. Most nights my husband is on the road a lot working. So when he is home for dinner, I love to have my son and hubby at the dinner table enjoying a home cooked meal.

Ragu is encouraging families to gather around the dinner table with their “Ready. Set. Cook!” contest! This contest challenges home cooks to create a new and unique recipe featuring Ragu and ingredients from a set list. For four weeks (from 11/2 – 11/30) you can enter this cooking challenge. The goal is for us to think outside of the box and create a dish that goes beyond the expected and utilizes Ragu sauce. The grand prize winner will receive $3,000, the runner-up $1,250 and the people’s choice winner will receive $750!

I love these kinds of challenges and thus created this Spaghetti Squash with Shrimp, Bacon and Feta recipe. I’ve never made this before and to be honest, have never created a dish combining those four ingredients and marinara sauce. So I was eager to see how it would turn out. I knew their flavors should all go well with Ragu Sauce. But I was still a bit nervous. I shouldn’t have been, though, because this turned out amazing! For more info on this contest, head HERE.

One of the things I love about this meal, is that it is a one pan meal. You do need to cook the spaghetti squash in the oven. But while that is cooking, get a deep pan out and start working on the toppings. Start by browning the bacon – remove once cooked but reserve the drippings in the pan. Then, cook the shrimp – just like the bacon – remove once cooked but reserve the drippings in the pan. And lastly, make the sauce.

To the Ragu Traditional sauce I added a little dill and feta cheese. I slowly brought the sauce to a boil.

Once the sauce starts boiling, add the cooked bacon and spaghetti squash. Mix together.

Then, add the cooked shrimp. You can either leave the shrimp on the top, or mix with the sauce. I found the sauce to be so tasty that I wanted it to cover the shrimp. So I mixed everything together. This recipe turned out amazing. The saltiness from the bacon went perfectly with sweetness of the sauce and the tanginess of the feta cheese. And honestly, what isn’t better than shrimp in pasta! I’m not going to lie, I’m shocked my city isn’t on there (Tampa). I never had allergies when I lived in Connecticut. But ever since we moved to Florida, I’ve experienced itchy eyes and sneezing. For a while I was even getting allergy shots! For me, my allergies were triggered when my husband and I lived in a horrible apartment in the Tampa Bay area. Something about the apartment (we suspected mold) triggered all of my allergies. All of a sudden I was allergic to my dog, my cats, grass and even palm trees (per the allergy testing). Once we left that apartment, my allergies were not so extreme. But I do deal with itchy eyes and sneezing almost daily. And yes, we still have our animal babies. I was fortunate that my dog and cat allergies were not extreme. I’ve always loved Scotties tissues and thus it made perfect sense for me to post about them! Their tissues are durable and yet soft. Everyday Health listed some great tips on fighting allergies. Go HERE to see the list. Below are some of my favorite tips:

1) Wear Sunglasses to Keep Pollen Out of Your Eyes- “The best kinds of sunglasses to wear are dark glasses that wrap around to block as much wind pollen as possible,” Dr. Hong says.
2) Kill Dust Mites With a Hot Wash – Wash all of your bedding in hot water and drying it in a hot dryer to kill dust mites. Keep stuffed animals off the bed, and wash sheets and blankets at least once a week in water that’s 130° F or higher to limit the effects of dust mites.
3) Take a Vacation From Pollen – During pollen season, head to places where there is less pollen. (For me, that’s the beach! Maybe this is a good excuse to go to the beach more often!)
4) Adjust Home Humidity to Control Mold – Mold thrives in moisture. To help control indoor mold, use a dehumidifier or your air conditioner to keep your home humidity close to 50 percent. Take the guesswork out of measuring indoor humidity with a device called a hygrometer. It’s also important to clean up water spills promptly, fix any leaks, and change the filters in your air conditioner and heating ducts regularly.

When I was given the opportunity to review Dunkin’ Donuts’ new Pretzel Roll Sandwich, I jumped at it. We love all things Dunkin’. We go there multiple times each week to get $0.99 Dunkin Donuts Happy Hour Coffee. And my son loves it when we get him donuts. So this morning I was excited to have Asher (my son) “help mommy with work” and help me with this Dunkin’ Donuts Pretzel Roll Sandwich Review. He took his job very seriously and looked at me with his big eyes and said “we need to get a donut too.” So we headed to our neighborhood Dunkin’ Donuts and went through the drive through to pick up our breakfast. I ordered the Bacon, Egg and Cheese Pretzel Roll Sandwich as well as a large coffee and a glazed stick donut.

At first glance, the Pretzel Roll Sandwich looks like a pretzel. There are large salt flakes on the top. When I cut through the sandwich, I could tell that the bread was very soft. And it was. This sandwich was really good! The salt on the bread was the perfect accompaniment to bacon, egg and cheese. And, the roll really did taste like a pretzel! I split the sandwich with my son and he ate every bit of his sandwich (and his beloved donut).

I don’t write book reviews. As a blogger, I get lots of opportunities to review new children’s books, cookbooks, novels, biographies, cookbooks, etc. And I don’t do them. Why? With book reviews, usually the blogger gets the book for free. So that is a nice perk. I like free. But that isn’t the reason I decline book reviews. The reason I don’t do book reviews is because I don’t give myself time to read. Even though I absolutely love reading. (I have a stack of unread books to prove it.) I don’t give myself the luxury to sit down and read very often. But this book review is different. I actually sought it out. For some reason, I knew that I would not only enjoy reading this book but that I would relate to it. And for some reason, I knew that I would take the time to read it. So for the past two days, I’ve spent a couple hours a day by our pool reading the book while my son napped. Usually I spend naptime trying to get caught up on work. But I actually sat down, started reading and then became engrossed in the story of Jillian Lauren. And thus, I’m now here with my Everything You Ever Wanted: A Memoir book review.

If you are new to Jillian’s story, Jillian was a college dropout, a drug addict, and an international concubine in the Prince of Brunei’s harem. And she describes the early years of her life in her book Some Girls: My Life in a Harem. Nope, I haven’t read it. And yes, I have ordered it on Amazon as I plan to read it as soon as it arrives on my doorstep. In her new book Everything You Ever Wanted, Jillian continues her story as she is now sober, falls in love with a guitarist in a rock band, marries said guitarist and they plan on starting a family immediately. While I can’t necessarily relate to all aspects of Jillian’s early years, I can relate to her most recent years. As Jillian and her husband Scott begin trying to start a family, their attempts are in vain. And after trying practically every resource at their fingertips, they decide to stop trying and adopt. And they adopt in Ethiopia. Those are the reasons I felt so compelled to read and review this book. And as I started reading, I realized my story is actually even more comparable to Jillian’s than I initially thought.

Once they adopt, she describes, with brutal honesty, her thoughts and frustrations on attachment, cocooning, parenting, the reaction of the outside world on her parenting, her exhaustion and her doubt on whether or not she is a good mom. I don’t know about you, but I’ve felt all of those feelings. If you haven’t adopted, maybe attachment and cocooning aren’t words in your vocabulary. But I bet you can relate to questioning if you are a good parent. In the book Everything You Ever Wanted, Jillian Lauren shows just how messy parenthood really is. And she shows that it is okay to be honest and vulnerable about your thoughts as you navigate the road of parenthood.

Jillian also explains with specific detail every step they go through to work through their son’s attachment issues and sensory processing disorders. When you adopt children “from hard places”, their brains have not developed the way babies who are born to parents who immediately meet their needs, feed them immediately when they are hungry, play with them when they are awake, etc. Children from hard places often know neglect, malnutrition, abuse (either intentional or unintentional), lack of nurturing, etc. With these forms of neglect, their brains often lack the necessary components to easily attach to their parents and they also struggle with sensory issues. Myself and my husband walk this walk with our son whom we adopted from Ethiopia at the age of 10 months. While our son is thriving, we are always mindful of aiding his attachment to us. So we parent him differently than many families parent. And we are also watching him closely for sensory issues and are trying to parent in a manner that encourages sensory development. It is at times, exhausting. Not that parenthood in general isn’t exhausting. But parenting a child who you need to rehabilitate requires specific actions. And to read about the struggles of  Jillian’s son Tariku, shows me just how familiar their story is to my own with my son.

Through all of the hurdles she faces, she writes with humor, sarcasm and brutal honesty. If you are someone who likes having open and honest conversations with friends, reading this will seem as if you are hearing the good, bad and ugly from a close friend. And you may even be inspired and emboldened to stop hiding behind a facade of perfection and begin telling your story, whether it is good, bad or ugly.

The book Everything You Ever Wanted: A Memoir came out today on paperback. It is available on Amazon right now for $11.91. I don’t know about you, but I have a great stockpile on household cleaners. With the Rinse. Recycle. Reimagine program, Unilever is encouraging us to rinse our empty, used containers and then recycle them. Just imagine how the recycled containers can be used! They may return as hairbrushes, backpacks or even a backyard play set.

Below are some interesting facts on American and their bathroom products:

• Beware the product hoarders: 1 in 5 Americans (20%) have more than 10 bathroom products in plastic bottles in their bathroom at a given time. Only 34% of Americans recycle bathroom products meaning that approximately 600 million plastic bottles are sent to landfills each year!
• What gets Americans moving: Americans are more likely to go the distance to get a drink when thirsty, charge their phone, or answer a phone call than walk an empty plastic bottle from the bathroom to the recycle bin.
• Battle of the sexes: More men (80%) reported recycling their empty bathroom bottles than women (74%).

 So what do you take away from this? For me, I’m motivated to play a bigger part with recycling. Sometimes I find that using the blue recycle bag and setting it out separate from my garbage can is just too much work. What a lame excuse I have been using! Update – with the cold weather we have been experiencing, I’ve been craving more and more comfort meals like the 5 Minute Slow Cooker Smoky Beef Recipe I posted last month. I wanted to repost this easy recipe to help warm you up!

One of my New Year’s Resolutions has been to prepare more home cooked meals each week. With a super busy toddler and working full-time (while at the same time chasing, parenting AND potty training my super busy two year old), I find that I lack the time and energy to cook wholesome meals for my family. So this year, I’ve been making lots and lots of slow cooker meals because I find I can usually pack most of the major food groups into the slow cooker and then 6-8 hours later, I have a hearty meal ready to go. If you shop at Publix, you probably already know that Publix’s Best Meals Happen At Home send out monthly emails with links to printable Publix coupons. I wanted to test one of their Fastastic recipes out. I chose the Slow Cooker Smoky Beef Stew because it could be made in 5 minutes or less!! I headed to Publix and bought all of the ingredients needed. The only variation I made on the recipe is that it called for canned carrots and since I had fresh baby carrots, I decided to use those instead.

I don’t know if you find your mornings to be super busy, but I sometimes find that making slow cooker meals the night before is easier. Even fastastic meals like this 5 minute meal! So while I watched TV, I dumped all of the ingredients into the slow cooker insert and then covered it with plastic wrap and put it in my fridge.

The next morning, I removed the plastic wrap and placed the slow cooker insert into my slow cooker. Programmed the slow cooker to start and voila, I was done “cooking.”

The 5 Minute Slow Cooker Smoky Beef Stew was a hit in our family! We loved the smoky and creamy flavor of the sauce! It was a perfect cold weather meal. I made a rice and quinoa side dish to go with it. But it could very easily go over egg noodles or be made with a veggie like broccoli, cauliflower or zucchini!

Now that New Year’s has come and gone, it is during this time of January when I actually take a breath. I take a breath and start to think about how I want the year to go. I know that may seem silly. New Year’s resolutions are a big thing. But for me, I don’t like creating too many (if any) New Year’s resolutions because I don’t keep them. To not focus 100% on work or 100% on my son or 100% on cleaning my house (let’s be honest – I hate cleaning – I don’t spend 100% of my time cleaning – ha). Instead, I want to be more well-rounded and divide my time more evenly. And if I’m brutally honest, I want to take more time to spend on myself. I’ve neglected myself the past year and I want to begin taking better care of myself. I am so inspired when I see women who seem to be able to do it all. Yes, I realize that looks can be deceiving.. but when I see women running successful careers, having happy families, having a strong faith and taking care of their physical well-being, well, I admire them. And that is my goal for this upcoming year.

Every week I talk about the money we can save with Walgreens Balance Rewards. But did you know that you will get rewarded for living a healthy life with Balance Rewards? I have been a mom for a full year now. And when I look back at this year, I realize how blessed I’ve been having a healthy son who is charming, bright and loving. But when I look back, I also see just how tired I am. I used to be a runner. I ran marathons, half marathons and shorter races. I ran 4-5 times a week. After becoming a mom, my running dwindled and dwindled down. I was able to run a half marathon this past winter, but after that, I haven’t been able to get the energy to work out and run like I should. I don’t know if you have a hard time putting yourself and your health first. But if you do find this difficult, I can relate. Walgreens Balance Rewards program rewards us when we set health goals and it also helps us track our progress. You can connect this program to many devices. I currently have it on my iPhone as does my husband.

I was really excited to try this program out. If you have a smart phone, you can download the Walgreens App for free! Or, you can create an account on your laptop! Once I was on my app, I scrolled through all of the categories and clicked on “BR for healthy choices.” From there, I was able to set my first healthy goal. I gave myself a goal of walking 3,000 steps a day. You can connect the app RunKeeper, MyFitnessPal and MapMyFitness to your Walgreens app! (I have two of these apps on my phone already!) Or, if you have a Fitbit, iHealth Tracker or Jawbone Up24, you can connect those devices to your app.

I took my son for a walk and walked 1,000 steps. My Balance Rewards for healthy choices app logged my 1,000 steps and let me know that I was 33% to goal! Besides helping us meet our physical goals, they reward us with points as we meet them! The frugal girl in me loves this! Because as you know, Balance Rewards points equal money! Just 5,000 points equals $5.00 or 10,000 points equals $10.00! When you set your first healthy goal, you will receive 250 points. When you link a device or app to your Walgreens app, you will earn another 250 points. And for each mile you run, walk or bike, you will earn 20 points! There are even more ways to earn points that don’t involve fitness. If you get your blood pressure or blood glucose tested, you will earn 20 points per test! The pic below shows all of the ways to earn Balance Rewards points:

For me, using this app is a no-brainer. I need to walk more. I need to sweat more. This app will not only keep me on goal but reward me with Balance Rewards to use at Walgreens the next time I shop!

It is so good!  It is smooth and creamy and has the perfect combination of chocolate and marshmallow flavors tasting like a Smores!  (You can see in my picture above we have a glass of cold TruMoo as well as a mug of hot TruMoo! I added two big marshmallows to the hot TruMoo because I can never have too many marshmallows!)

And just in time to celebrate the dog days of summer ending, I will be giving away to 10 lucky winners a gift card for a FREE Mocha Cookies & Cream Milkshake from Chick-fil-A to cool you off!  Yummo!

Hubby is a first hand expert at all of Chick-fil-A’s menu items. We were both given a VIP Black Card that entitles us to FREE Chick-fil-A every day for the rest of the year, and hubby took them up on it. I think today was Day 76 of him eating Chick-fil-A in a row, and he has nothing but great things to say about the Mocha Cookies & Cream Milkshake.
