I’m posting this photo show and tell earlier in the day today because today I will be a bit distracted with my son’s birthday! He turned three today and he is SO excited. For me, there is nothing better than looking at holidays and birthdays through the eyes of children. And to see him get so excited by the streamers I hung on his doorway or the birthday balloons we blew up is just so fun! From my photo show and tell, you can see that I bought quite a few birthday related things. While I adore Publix cakes, this year, I decided to tackle making Asher’s cake myself. Once I make it, I will take a picture of it and update this post. Last year, Publix made us an amazing construction vehicle cake. This year, my son wants a tractor cake. Originally, I was going to have Publix make us a cake again. But then I looked on Pinterest and found a cake that looks pretty easy to make. So I’m going to tackle it today during Asher’s naptime. The Oreos I bought will be crushed  and used as the dirt that the tractor is moving and the rice cakes will become bales of hay. I didn’t have any frosting in my stockpile but I did have a box of cake mix and food coloring. I did the math and I spent $10.98 on frosting, cookies, rice cakes and cake decorating gel. This is considerably less than I would have spent on a bakery cake… wish me luck decorating it though! 😉

My favorite deal this week was definitely the Playtex Living Gloves. When I was a child, my mom always wore these gloves when she washed the dishes. So when I helped her, I always wore gloves too. I’m not a “delicate” person by any means, but when it comes to cleaning bathrooms or washing dishes, I like my hands to be covered 🙂 SO, getting packs of gloves for just $0.50 each was an AWESOME deal for me!

My son and I headed to Publix last night (Thursday) to do our shopping trip. He woke from his nap early and I had all of my coupons ready – so together we went to tackle the list. It was a large list! Publix has some good deals this week especially when combined with the available coupons. I’m still struggling with the fact that our garage freezer is gone. Our refrigerator/freezer combo in our kitchen is at capacity and I just wish I had a bit more space to store stuff! If I had more freezer space, I would have bought more Boca Burgers.. and I wouldn’t have had such a difficult time finding space for the Freschetta pizzas I bought. Hubby – if you are reading this – a freezer would be an excellent birthday present – wink wink.

My only frustration from last night’s shopping trip is the Tuscan Style Swanson Chicken Broth I bought expired in July! Usually while I’m grocery shopping, I try to examine the expiration dates before adding items to my cart. But I was distracted with my son. So it looks like I will be headed back to Publix to return the two cartons of broth. So frustrating!

I’ve had a busy week! It’s only getting busier this weekend so I don’t think I’ll get in a much needed nap. But, I’m very excited because my brother is coming to stay with us tomorrow night and my son just LOVES his uncle. We have had a great week this week! It’s the end of the week and I’m always running on empty during this time of the week. In fact, as I’m typing this, my son is napping and I’m SO tempted to nap. Today is the first time in a long time that I felt like an official couponer. Now, I did spend a lot of money. But, I was able to add to my dwindling stockpile and really stock up on some necessities that we use a lot of! My absolute favorite deal was the Birds Eye Protein Blends deal. After using the $1.00 off coupon, each bag was only $0.45! And I also loved the Prego Sauce deal. We are down to just two jars of sauce in our stockpile and while I don’t use jar sauce often, I like to have more on hand for quick pinches and slow cooker meals that call for sauce. My son’s favorite deal is the Musselman’s apple sauce deal. Apple sauce is a staple in our house and I love that I was able to get him six 6-packs of unsweetened apple sauce! I am also very intrigued by the Betty Crocker Suddenly Salad Mixes. It wasn’t a stellar “deal” (each box was $0.90 each) but I have never tried their new flavors and look forward to making them.

Happy Friday! Hubby was so awesome and tonight he took Asher to Publix to do our weekly shopping trip. This past year I have been dealing with neck and upper back issues and this past week my pain has been unbearable at times. If I could, I would be laying down all day because I find the pain subsides to a manageable level when my head is resting on a flat mattress. But alas, that isn’t going to happen! So I’m doing my neck exercises, icing, taking turmeric supplements as well as Aleve and I’ll be headed back to the chiropractor next week. All that to say, the idea of shopping sounds horrible! So I was thankful when hubby offered to go!

This week was a very special week for us as a family. On Wednesday, the 19th, we celebrated “Family Day.” Family Day is the anniversary of the day our son joined our family and we became a family of three. We’ve been a family of three for two full years now – time flies! I honestly think I like this day more than birthdays. It’s just such a special day for us. In honor of family day, we went to the Ethiopian restaurant Queen of Sheba in Tampa. We feasted on Ethiopian food and then came home to eat cake. If you never have tried Ethiopian food, you really should try it! It’s quite the experience. Most of the foods are stew-like and have been simmering in flavorful spices all day long. The main staple of the meal is injera. It is a sponge-like sour doughish tortilla-like pancake that you use to eat your food. You don’t use utensils. You just use pieces of the injera to pick up the food. It’s a great meal for toddlers who barely use their forks! 😉 Just make sure you specify whether or not you like your food spicy as some of the food can be pretty spicy!

Today’s shopping trip was a small one where we focused on some of the good BOGO deals. I wanted to stock up on some more freezer deals, but now that our stand alone freezer has died, we are very limited on freezer space. Now I need to find myself a deal on a good freezer!

I know when you look at today’s shopping trip, you will find a lot of odd combinations! I did go to the store earlier this week for milk. Today’s goal was frozen pizzas and some produce. And, the ingredients for a new, decadent brownie I want to try making that requires marshmallows and rice krispies. The best deal I got today was on Toaster Strudel. But my favorite deal was Sandra’s Chicken. Such an easy dinner to make (with a veggie as a said) and very tasty!

We’ve had a wonderful week though! Busy! But isn’t it always that way? My son is keeping me on my toes with all of the witty things he’s been saying. Toddlers are exhausting but oh so much fun. And I know that someday, when Asher’s all grown and out of the house, I am going to miss these moments!
