Time is flying for us! I know that I said this before we brought our boy home but now that he is home, I’m finding that time is flying even faster!  Our days revolve around naptime, meals and diaper changes. Is it that way for all of you who are moms? 🙂 We’ve had a week of “firsts” though!  Asher slept through the night two nights in a row which makes this tired mom very happy!  We also went to our neighborhood pool twice thus far and Asher loved the pool!  Tonight we had a family date at Publix and while hubby and I were concerned about how Asher would do (he was super fussy prior to going to the store), once at Publix, Asher became his fun, happy self shaking a bottle of Orbit gum as we walked down all of the aisles.  So it was a great end to the week!

This week’s Publix shopping trip was a fun one for me because it included a lot of “healthier” foods.  We did spend a bit more than I would have liked, but we still saved quite a bit and the food we purchased will all be eaten, so I’m okay with it!  So often, people tell me that they can’t save money on healthy foods like organic vegetables and fruits, protein bars, produce, etc.  One of my tips for saving on organic produce is to purchase frozen vegetables & fruits when they are on sale and you have a coupon.  For example, I bought 6 bags of Cascadian Farm frozen peas (Asher loves peas and I’ve been mashing them for him) and with the available coupons, each bag was only $0.75.  While I could have spent less on non-organic frozen peas, $0.75/bag is a great price on organic!

Today was a great day to go shopping at Publix! There are lots of fun sales that I was excited to take advantage of (including a rare stockpile deal on Heinz Ketchup)!  I’m not going to lie, my favorite deal of the day was taking advantage of the Sabra Hummus & Guacamole BOGO sales.  My two favorite extravagant purchases were the bag of Smartfood Popcorn and the loaf of fresh Publix Bakery Bread.  Ever since I was in Ethiopia the first time (in June), I have been eating gluten.  I know I need to go off of it as I don’t feel as healthy and energetic eating gluten as when I was g-free… BUT… I have been craving fresh bread. In fact, I tried to make two loafs on Wednesday with my breadmaker.  The first loaf I butchered as unbeknownst to me, the recipe I was following required the incorrect amount of water.  The second loaf I butchered because I was tired, frustrated about wasting the ingredients on the first loaf and had a crying baby on my hands.  SO, all that to say, the $2.99 loaf of Publix bakery bread makes me very happy.

I was also excited to be able to continue to save on baby products!  I was able to get two MAM bottles for $0.79 each and I was able to get another 50 pack of Playtex dropins for just $1.29!  When I factor that in with the three packs of Huggies Diapers I got at CVS for around $1.15 per pack (when factoring in the $10 ECBs I earned), I’m on a roll!  I have about 30 jars of Earth’s Best Baby Food in my pantry that I purchased on Amazon clipping the online 10% off coupon and also signing up for Subscribe & Save.  While I love the convenience of jarred baby food, I’m also experimenting with making my own food as a way to control cost and the ingredients.  Thus far I’ve made mashed butternut squash (that is the one squash I don’t like but Asher LOVED it), mashed peas and a mashed fruit medley with apples, plums and peaches.  The baby food I made (minus the mashed peas) involved the fruits and veggies from our veggie coop which has been great.  This week we got a bag of green beans and I think I’m going to try mashing some of them to see if Asher likes them. Everything has been a hit thus far as our boy loves to eat!

Today was also a great day to shop at Publix because I went with hubby and for the first time we brought Asher! I went to a “supermarket” twice in Ethiopia with Asher.  The supermarkets in Ethiopia are a complete 360 from what they are here in the states.  Asher is too young to acknowledge noticing the differences, but I wondered if the bright lights of the store and all of the colors of groceries on the shelves perhaps looked a bit strange to him.  He will get used to it quickly though as we are in our local Publix at least once (if not more) each week!
