American Girl Dolls were first introduced in 1986 and I was just 8 years old at the time. When I was a child my mother gave me a Samantha doll for Christmas as well as the book series that goes along with her. The Samantha Doll in 1986 looked differently than the Samantha Doll available now but it was just as wonderful. As a child I loved dolls and I loved to read. So reading books that had told the story of the doll I owned was so exciting and interesting to me. Did you have an American Girl doll growing up? Which one(s)? I unfortunately do not have my American Girl Doll now but I did save the book set for my daughter. She’s at the age where I can read the books to her and she finds them interesting just like I did as a child. Soon she will be able to read them herself!
For Christmas this year, my daughter asked for three things 1) a doctor kit 2) an art set and 3) The American Girl WellieWishers Doll Emerson. Every year I have my children look through toy magazines and circle the toys they would like for Christmas. When my daughter saw a page with American Girl Dolls, she was transfixed on Emerson. My daughter is Chinese American. As a white mother to a Chinese daughter, I’ve realized that there are not many books, television shows, dolls, toys, etc that feature Asian let alone Chinese children. So when my daughter saw Emerson, she immediately said “Momma, she looks like me!” I already loved American Girl but when my daughter said that, I knew this would be a gift that we would give her and that she would cherish.
I also have a black son and love that American Girl features black girl and black boy dolls. In fact, when we gave our daughter the Emerson doll my son said he would like one of the American Girl black boy dolls! Mirrors are so important for our children and my son now wants a doll that looks like him. I’m thankful American Girl features more diverse dolls and hope they continue to do so!
