One of my favorite blog posts that I type up throughout the year is our Gift Guides. I love to share new gift ideas and family favorite gift ideas with all of you throughout the year! This Mother’s Day, I’m sharing only a few of my favorite gift ideas. These gift ideas are all items I use daily and love. It’s a small list because I wanted to keep this Mother’s Day Gift Guide very concise with literally the only gifts I would want this year (if I didn’t already have them).

Through the years I have relied on the beauty of Teleflora’s bouquets to help brighten each holiday. This Mother’s Day, their floral arrangement “All Eyes On You” is my absolute favorite. The bouquet comes in a bubble glass vase which is clear glass at the top and then transitions to a dark purple at the bottom. The arrangement is filled with hot pink roses, pink spray roses, light pink asiatic lilies, purple stock, lavender cushion spray chrysanthemums, purple sinuata statice, huckleberry, and leatherleaf fern.

For those of you are eat low carb, follow KETO or are just trying to reduce your sugar intake, this is for you. When I started watching my sugar intake, I found that my daily coffees were no longer enjoyable. I didn’t enjoy regular stevia in my coffee and found the aftertaste was bitter and just yuck. Pyure has made my coffees enjoyable again. I don’t use a lot of it – just a little – but it sweetens my coffee with a hint of vanilla and doesn’t leave the yucky aftertaste that regular stevia left. If you are looking for a sugar free sweetener with stevia, try this out!

Cell phone covers are a necessity aren’t they?!? My husband and I both got new iPhone 8s and I took my time getting a cell phone cover. BIG MISTAKE. For some reason, I have found the iPhone 8 to be crazy slippery. Without a cover, I’ve had it sitting on a chair and when  my phone has vibrated from either playing music or receiving a phone call, the phone will fall right off the chair. I’ve had it slip off of my nightstand when it’s vibrated.. I’ve even had it slip off of my kitchen counter. It’s either possessed or Apple intentionally made the phone slippery with the hopes of us having to replace them quickly. My phone fell to the ground at least 5 times and on the sixth time, the screen shattered.

Enter OtterBox. If I had just purchased an OtterBox cover early on, I wouldn’t have this cracked screen on my phone now. I now have the OtterBox Symmetry cover  in Rose Gold on my phone. Because I have two little kiddos who touch my phone – and also because I want extra protection –  I also have OtterBox Alpha Glass Protector on my screen.

My husband needs even more protection on his phone because of all of the traveling he does. He has a Black/Clear OtterBox Pursuit Series phone cover as well as the  OtterBox Alpha Glass Protector.

These founds are expensive luxuries and I’ve learned the hard way the importance of protecting my investment.

I use my Flipy Soft Pillow Lap Stand every day. If I’m reading or watching a movie on my tablet, scrolling through my phone or even reading a regular book, I use my Flipy Lap Stand. It’s soft and light weight and has three different viewing angles. Being able to change the viewing angles helps reduce glares on my screens and also positions my device perfectly for my eyes. Before I became an adult, I never would have predicted that I would get excited about practical gifts like vacuums. I’ve found that with age, practical things like vacuums, blenders, pots and pans, bath towels, etc etc get me very excited! It’s giveaway time! When I started working on my 2015 Holiday Gift Guide, one of the first brands that I was in communication with is this brand. I had never heard of Canary before but upon research, I realized that this is an amazing company with an equally awesome product.  When they asked me to do a review AND a giveaway of their Canary All-in-One Security System, I jumped at it because we had already fallen in love with our security system!

One of the things you will notice when you unpack your Canary, is that the packaging is top notch. And when you unload the box, you will be pleased to see there are not a lot of loose parts. (This means, it isn’t tricky to install which, as a busy mom, I greatly appreciate! )

The first thing you will want to do is download the Canary app on your phone. Once you do this, the app will literally walk you through every step of the install process. You start by plugging the Canary

into an electric outlet. Then, you connect your phone to the Canary (using the audio cord that comes with your system). And then, you connect the Canary to your wifi using the app. EASY.

If you want to know my only complaint is that I had a difficult time connecting to my wifi. I was starting to think that I was having network problems but upon doing some research, I learned that the Canary only connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks. I didn’t know what that meant until I realized that our wifi network is 5GHz. It wasn’t a difficult problem to sort out though. I had to go on my phone and connect to my slower wifi network and immediately the Canary connected to wifi. Problem solved.

Once the Canary was connected to the internet, the app on my phone walked me through setup for the Canary. And it showed me how to use the Canary. It is EASY to use. You literally just have to press “Watch Live” to view what is going on in your house that very minute. I found there was a very slight (maybe 10 or 15 seconds) delay. But my son (he’s 3) found it hilarious to say something and then watch the video footage on my phone repeat his words right back.

The picture below is of the Canary video footage on my phone. If you look closely, you can see me with my son on my lap sitting on a chair in the bottom left corner of my phone screen. The quality of the video is amazing which makes sense because Canary has a 1080p HD camera! The audio quality is also excellent. I was able to hear everything both in our room (it is a great room with a family room, kitchen and breakfast nook) and beyond our room.

With Canary, you can either take advantage of their Free Video Access Plan or upgrade to a 2-day, 7-day or 30-day plan. Some companies require you to purchase a paid plan so I love that you do not have to.

Besides being able to watch live videos of your home, this Canary system also has an alarm system. The Canary senses when you come and go, and automatically changes modes from armed to unarmed. If activity is detected in your home while you are away, Canary will alert you and you can manually sound the siren on your Canary (it is LOUD), contact the authorities, or ignore the notification.

The Canary is also inconspicuous. Can you tell where the Canary is? Not easily right? I love that it doesn’t stand out and also love its sleek design. It truly is an amazing system. One of my thoughts is I may get another system to use in my son’s room as a baby monitor. I like this SO much better than our existing baby monitor and I also love the added bonuses of safety!

Happy New Year! We left the day after Christmas and drove 16 hours straight (with a two year old) to celebrate a late Christmas with my husband’s family in St Louis. Along with spending time with family, we breathed in the refreshing (and frigid) Missouri air and were thankful for the warmer weather we experience in Florida. We stayed at my in-laws house along with lots of cousins, aunts and uncles. And germs. Almost everyone got sick. I got it the worst. I have never been so sick in my life. You know you are sick when you ask your husband to come check on you to make sure you haven’t passed out. I’m feeling a lot better now and am thankful that Asher and hubby didn’t get too sick. Yesterday we packed up and drove another 16 hours to return home. I had to have hubby pull over about 30 minutes into our car trip. He wisely recommended I take some Dramamine and thank God that the Dramamine kicked in quick and settled my stomach and allowed us to drive home without my getting sick  during the drive. Sleeping in my own bed last night was wonderful. There is nothing better than being home when you are sick!

I know I say this every year, but I wanted to take a moment to tell you how thankful I am that you are in my life! I love my Addicted to Saving family. I’m excited to see where 2015 takes all of us. I know that while some of us may have had an amazing year in 2014, others of us had a year filled with grief, sadness, disappointment and hardship. I hope that 2015 brings all of us true joy and contentment.

On a side note, we’ve been out of town visiting my in-laws and just returned home! You may have noticed that the deals, coupons and freebies slowed a bit since Christmas. We’ll be picking things up again and business will go on as usual.

On this page, every single deal is posted including store coupon matchups, high value coupons, free samples, and more.

Saving on Grocery Items

1) Before shopping, check out the store’s weekly ad & coupon matchups. (I have the matchups for Publix, Winn-Dixie, Aldi, Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, etc etc) Print your grocery list and applicable coupons and gather coupons from your Sunday papers.

2) Look in the coupon database to see if any additional groceries have coupons you can use.

3) Watch www.addictedtosaving.com for additional deals that appear throughout the week.

4) If you are interested in learning more about Zaycon Foods (this is the company that has events approximately every month and sells meat at awesome prices), go HERE. This is where we buy our ground beef and boneless, skinless chicken breasts. I buy 40 pounds, share some with my mother, and then we live off of the meat that I’ve frozen for months.

Saving on Gifts

1) Watch for sales – When I find awesome sales, I post them. All day long. So bookmark Addicted to Saving and check in once or twice a day. Along with that, make sure you have joined the Addicted to Saving Holiday Deals Facebook Group as I mentioned above. This is the place that all holiday related deals will be posted.

2) Watch Amazon’s Lightning Deals each day. I post the deals in the morning and reminders throughout the day on Facebook.

3) Consider joining Amazon Prime for free two day shipping, 30 minute early access to select lightning deals, instant streaming of countless TV shows & movies, and more. You can sign up for a free 30 day trial HERE. After the trial, your membership will be $99.00 for a year.

4) Watch the deals on Kohl’s. They give awesome coupon codes and often give us free $10.00 in Kohl’s Cash for each $50.00 we spent. And, they often give rebates on select items.

5) If you are shopping in-stores on Black Friday, make sure you check out all of the Black Friday ads HERE. You can also print out your shopping lists.

6) If you are looking for a specific item and want to see what store(s) have the best deals on Black Friday for specific items, go HERE and search the item.

Saving on Holiday Travel

If you are flying, my two favorite “deals” websites that I always compare are Travelocity and Kayak. I then compare their rates with individual airline’s website rates. Usually they are the same. But sometimes, I can get a better deal going direct to Delta, United, etc.

I wonder how many of you struggle with the darkness. I don’t mean the actual darkness of nighttime, although perhaps when night falls, your soul saddens. I mean, every day as you take each step, your mind tugs and pulls you towards feelings of darkness and sadness and hopelessness and maybe even self hatred.

About two months ago, I made an intentional decision to use Facebook less. Obviously, I use it countless times a day for this blog… but I use it less for personal stuff. Facebook is such a magnificent place for reuniting with old friends and following their lives. But when it comes down to it, what do we really see on Facebook? We see all of the good stuff. We don’t see the messy stuff. We don’t hear about people’s marriages who are hanging on by a thread, parents who are mourning the poor decisions their children are making, families who are swimming in debt, wanna be mommas who cry each month when their pregnancy tests turn up negative, wives (or husbands) who suspect their spouse is cheating on them, and the list goes on and on. Life is messy. Life is hard. And for some of us, it is difficult to get through the darkness of it.

For me, it got to the point where I had a difficult time seeing through the facade of happy Facebook photos. All I would see is picture perfect families on vacation, Pinterest worthy pictures of excited families announcing pregnancies, prestigious job updates and basically, the good stuff. Even I would (and still do) post fun pictures of my two year old showing just how adorable he is and witty he is and fun he is. But behind the pictures are so much more. Life isn’t always easy. He’s 2 years old. So that should say enough. But along with that we have other challenges (hello – working 10 hour days from home AND parenting a two year old at the same time). I don’t post about the challenges. Maybe people don’t want to hear? Maybe they will be scared off? Maybe they will judge me? So I have slowed down my time on Facebook. It hasn’t solved life’s problems, but it has given me a breath of fresh air.

Depression is such a nasty disease. It has taken the lives of so many outwardly successful and happy people. And millions of people right now are struggling with it at varying levels. If you are, you know that sometimes, getting out of bed is the first step towards having a good day. (Why is it that staying in bed all day just seems so comforting?) And as a side note – you can’t “pray depression away”. Prayer helps and prayer is sometimes all that is needed for some people. But for many people, their chemicals and hormones are so imbalanced that they need medication to level themselves out. If you are someone who has never experienced depression, take a moment now and thank God that you are so lucky. Do not judge people that are in the throws of darkness. Do not condemn them for seeing a counselor or taking medication. Instead, be a support system for them. Listen to them. Drag them out of their house to go for a walk. Be there for them. They don’t feel like anyone understands or is there for them – so take the time to convince them otherwise.

I’ve put together a list of some of the things that help pull myself out of the darkness. I don’t always follow the list. In fact, when I am struggling the most, I may just be happy that I’ve gotten out of bed and kept my two year old alive, fed and laughing. Other days, I do a lot more on  my list. It just depends on the day. If you find that you too struggle with darkness, I would love to hear your thoughts and also any additional activities that help you. Leave a comment. My list below is not all encompassing. There are countless other things that help people – so please share your ideas.

1) Go outside and get some fresh air. I know sounds simple. But sometimes, we don’t want to leave the comforts of our safe haven. Get some fresh air, look at the sky, appreciate God’s beauty in nature and walk.

2) Get exercise. This is the hardest item for me to follow. I am a runner. A long-distance runner. In the past, running has been exactly what I needed to clear my mind and relieve stress. But this past year has done a number on my energy levels and motivation to exercise. Do it though. Get outside and move. Move long enough to break a sweat. The endorphins will lift some of the darkness. I promise.

3) Laugh. Sometimes it is so difficult to muster up the energy to laugh. But do it. Put on an old episode of Family Ties or The Wonder Years (I love that show). Or put on a corny movie. Give yourself the permission to laugh.

4) Talk to friends and loved ones. They can’t help you unless they know what is going on. I know you are afraid of being judged. Maybe you are afraid they will say you are not a good enough Christian. Or that you shouldn’t be on meds. Or that it is all in your head. But you may be surprised at how they respond! I had a conversation with a friend and we were talking about the negative stigma many Christians have on depressions and medications and the fact that life is messy. If you are worried about what others think, I want to take the time to tell you that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Listen to me when I say that. Don’t get sucked in to the pretty facade that people show on Facebook. Behind their Pinterest worthy pictures are real problems and messy lives. They are just choosing not to show the truth. And frankly, I don’t show my messy life on Facebook either.

5) Eat healthy. I know. The bag of Doritos is so tasty. (yes, the whole bag.) Or the brownie batter is so good – especially before you add the raw egg. Or the bucket of fried chicken is so so good. When you feel yourself being pulled towards the junk, find an alternative. Eat an apple, keep fresh grapes on your counter, make a scrambled egg, drink some water. Try to find an alternative to the temptation of binging on sweet or salty (or if you are like me, sweet AND salty ) foods.

6) Get help. Talk to your doctors. Get blood work to see if your hormone levels are off. If you have thought about seeing a doctor to talk about the darkness, you need to call right now and make an appointment. Don’t wait any longer – you can feel happier and healthier. Sometimes, you just need to start by talking to a professional. If you are experiencing thoughts of ending your life, please get on the phone and contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

7) Find the good in the bad. Martin Luther King Jr said “Only in the darkness can you see the stars.” This is a time when you should reflect on your life. Learn from the past – if it has caused you pain – release the pain – FORGIVE – and take steps to create a different future. See the good in the bad. Nighttime can seem so dark and so lonely. But during the night, we can see the stars or as my two year old says “I see moon. Ni-night moon.”

8) Pray for insight, clarity and peace. Sometimes all I need to tell myself is that I am a child of God. And immediately some of the self doubt and self hatred dissipates.

And be honest with yourself and with others. I wanted to take a moment to share this with you, because I don’t want you to think my life is picture perfect. Yes, I save a lot of money each week. Yes, I have an adorable son who I love more than life itself. Yes, I have a dog who is adorable and never takes a bad picture. But my life is so much deeper and messier than my saving money tips and my busy toddler and my dog. Did you know my dog poops on the floor? Yup. See? I don’t show you that side of my life much

Embrace the messiness, OWN it and seek help if needed.

Teething.  Sigh. We are in the midst of lots and lots of teething. Because my son is behind on his teeth, we are excited when he starts to get new teeth. And then, reality hits and we realize that his life is miserable (as is ours) for the first 48 hours or so when that tooth starts to appear.

When I became a new mom last fall, countless friends recommended Hyland’s Teething Tabs for teething. Since Asher didn’t have any teeth until a few months after he turned one, I really didn’t have to worry about teething pain for a while. But once he started teething, I realized that there was lots of pain involved with him getting his teeth. I personally like Hyland’s Teething Gel as well as Hyland’s Teething Tabs.  I will often alternate between the two throughout the day. I also love the fact that you can dissolve a teething tab in a spoon with some water to help your child take it easier. Since Asher doesn’t quite understand the concept of keeping a tab under his tongue until it dissolves, dissolving it first gives me the peace of mind that the tablet is doing its job and helping reduce his teething pain.

Hyland’s products are natural homeopathic medicines. While I don’t have a problem giving Asher pain relievers made specifically for babies and toddlers, I would much rather attempt to fix the problem with homeopathic remedies. Most of the time, when we use Hyland’s Teething Tabs and/or Hyland’s Teething Gel, we don’t need to use any additional pain relievers. I love this. And Asher has grown accustomed to us giving him a tablet or gel. We just ask him if his tooth is giving him an “owie” and if he would like some “medicine.” The answer is usually a resounding yes.

This post has nothing to do with couponing, and it’s not even Liza posting it – it’s her husband – so I’m giving you fair warning to skip right over this post if you’re only looking for deals.

For those who might be interested, I wanted to let you know that I’m helping lead a Man Up Missions Trip to Africa this summer. If you’ve ever thought about going to Africa to serve on a missions team but haven’t, consider this your gentle nudge!  You don’t need to live in Florida to go on this trip, as we will have participants from many different parts of the country.

What does a Man Up team do?

Our desire is to see men “get in the game” by serving orphans and widows in their distress, and being the husbands and fathers we believe God has called us to be.  While we love having men get involved, you do not have to be male to go on this trip.  Typically our trips consist of about 60% men and 40% women.  So regardless of your gender, if partnering with local Ugandans to advocate for orphans and widows is something you feel led to do, then we hope you’ll considering joining one of our teams this summer.

We have two trips slated:

• May 27 – June 7 in Uganda
• June 17 – June 28 in Uganda

Please join us for a conference call we’re having this upcoming Sunday evening, February 23rd, at 9 p.m. EST.  You’ll get to hear all the details and ask as many questions as you’d like.

2013 was a crazy year for us.  I traveled to Africa by myself and met my husband there (he was already there on a missions trip) in June. Together, we went to our son’s orphanage and met him for the first time. We spent a week with him and then returned home. I then went back to Africa by myself and this time flew with a one-way ticket planning on staying with our son until we were cleared to bring him home to the U.S. Together, Asher and I stayed in a guest house and then hotel for 2.5 weeks before we headed home. Our life as parents has just been amazing.  I am so thankful to see where God has taken us.

I can’t wait to see where 2014 takes us!  I hope that you had a wonderful 2013.  If you didn’t, my hope is that this New Year will bring you a fresh start.

On a side note, we’ve been out of town visiting my in-laws and just returned home!  You may have noticed that the deals, coupons and freebies slowed a bit since Christmas.  We’ll be picking things up again and business will go on as usual.
