One of the things I have noticed since I started Addicted to Saving is that many of you have awesome tips on everything from couponing to cooking to gardening to finding deals, etc. So, I thought I would start a new 5 day post where every afternoon, I ask a common question that I get in my email inbox. I will attempt to answer the question and then all of you can chime in with how you would answer the question! The goal of this is for all of us to learn from each other. In order for this daily post to be a success, you all need to leave comments with your thoughts and ideas. I can’t wait to hear them!
Let’s Discuss: How many Sunday newspapers do you purchase?
My Thoughts: So many new Addicted to Saving readers email me each week asking me how many newspapers they should purchase on Sundays. Here’s the thing – there is no correct answer. It depends on your family size, your family needs and how into couponing you want to get. When I first started couponing, I bought 2 newspapers per week. Once I got hooked, I started buying more newspapers. Now, every Sunday I buy 12 papers – 8 for myself and 4 for a friend. I do always recommend that you purchase your newspapers in even numbers. The reason for this is because if you shop at stores that have BOGO sales, many of those stores will let you use two coupons on the two items you purchase in the BOGO sale. So, you always want at least even number duplicates of each coupon. While I currently purchase 8, I think I am going to start buying 6 papers per week soon. I have a great stockpile and there is not much that I really need. So, while my stockpile is “stocked”, I may decrease the number of papers I purchase. We’ll see though – I’m “addicted” to buying 8 per week for myself! 🙂

I purchase two papers every week and with just those two I feel that I get enough to last. We do not have a lot of storage room in our home so if I were to buy more papers I would have to start storing things in odd places, like under the bed. 🙂 Right now we are a family of 3 so two papers supply us plenty.
I buy 4 papers every week. I have a family of 5 (including a mother-in-law that lives with us) and we have a good stockpile. I also have been giving away stuff lately so I think it is a great amount 🙂 I might buy more if I can find cheap papers again (at $1.75 per paper it starts adding up fast…)
I purchase 4. This has helped me get a nice stockpile. There are just three of us and I don’t cook for my husband (he’s picky). I think when my subscription is up I will be going down to two and get extra’s as needed.
I have a family of 6 so I buy 6 papers every week. It sometimes is not enough so I am thinking about upping it to 10. My children enjoy certain things and sometimes 6 items is not enough to get through the next sales cycle.
I only buy 2 paper every week, and I have trained my co workers to toss there coupons in my inbox at work. Every Mondy I usually have a basket full of coupon inserts and this saves me money. ; )
I buy at least four papers each week. I always look ahead at the preview to see what is expected and if I see something I know we use a lot of, then I will buy more. 🙂
I purchase six papers. We are a family of eight. I do feel more papers would be valuable, however it is not in the budget at this time.
I buy 6 per week and a friend used to get me an additional 4 and with those coupons I was able to donate to the food bank once a month, at least 15 bags of food and toiletries. However this year I am so busy I will not have time to do the same number of shops. I can still donate quarterly on 6 papers and keep my stockpile full..
I buy 12 a week because I shop for my boyfriends Fire station as well.
i normally buy 3 papers, as i get one delivered to my house. i will look through that one first and if i see any good coupons, i will decide if i should buy extra. this also helps me to see how many inserts should be in the papers that i buy at the store.
I’ve heard people say to buy as many papers as there are people in your house. That works for us. We have a 2 person household, and we buy 2 newspapers. I find though that the best coupons come from the Internet anyway, so I don’t worry about buying a lot of papers.
That is so true that, is why I buy 2 papers. My husband also pick up the leftovers from the doctor lounge.
My mother gives me her coupons from the Orlando Sentinel, so I buy one paper to match hers. My neighbor gives me HER coupons from the Daytona News-Journal, so I usually buy one of that paper too. The 2 papers sometimes have different coupons, so I have to have 2 of each. I just took advantage of the great Sentinel subscription deal you posted about, so I should start receiving the paper at home soon. 🙂
Oh, and both of those papers have stopped reducing the price of the Sunday papers midweek. I used to be able to pick up the leftover Sunday papers at CVS or wherever on Wednesday or later for only 99 cents. No more. Full price no matter how old the paper is. 🙁
I buy 4 for my family of 5 and mother! Our Sunday paper went from 50 cents to $1, but can’t live without my deals! We give alot away to a local single parent family charity, so have to keep up my stockpile!
I get 2 papers each week. I was only getting 1 until a few weeks ago when I found out that my local newspaper offers a second paper for only $1/YEAR!!! How could I pass that deal up? I also have a friend in a nearby city (bigger than the one I live in) who gives me her (bigger and better) coupon inserts from time to time.
I get 8 papers a week for my family of 5 (almost 6). 6 papers would work for us but I got a great deal from my bigger local paper, .35 per paper Sunday only delivery. So im able to put the extra items I get up for my brother-in-law, He has been struggling raising my 4 teen nieces and every little bit helps.
I get 4 subscriptions delivered to my house. I bought a few of them through deals like Groupon and such and from some kids through the neighborhood for money for college. I started couponing about 8 months ago and started with 2 but I like to stock up on good deals so I find 4 is sufficient. My fiance likes to eat my goodies so I like to have extra.
I buy two local, and six with the regional coupons. I have a family of four, on is a teenage boy and I am curious a to how others get a stock pike with teenagers in their house My oldest always ears it a fast as it comes in, he is under weight according to his doctor, he is just really active.
I buy 4-6 per week, depending on the coupons. That gives me enough for our family of six and enough to share. If there’s something really good, I’ll buy 8-10. The price of papers isn’t anywhere near the amount of savings I get.
If I see a coupon or two that I like, I tend to go towards 10. If there is a P & G I go towards 10. If there isn’t that much to be excited about, I get as little as 4 and trade coupons with friends if it ends up where I want more of that coupon.
I used to at least get 2 per week, 4 on the P&G weeks, but now my dh has a friend that delivers papers and he gives us all his extra Sunday papers every Wednesday after he picks up all the leftovers- sometimes up to 80 newspapers!!! 😉 Now I only buy 1 on Sunday just to see what coupons are in it.
We live in the mountains so getting a paper delivered is not an option and the nearest store to get a good paper that carries inserts is a half hour away and they charge $4.00 a paper so…..we check out the inserts on line on Friday to see if there is enough coupons to make it worth the trouble and we order just the inserts from the St. Pete times at Sunday coupon inserts.com. we order the combo pack which is 6 or 10 of each insert plus $4.95 us postal priority mail. Last weekend we got 5 inserts (6 each) plus postage was only $19.95. We saved that on our first purchase of emerald nuts at cvs which had them on sale (the big ones) 2/$7.00 with a .75 cent coupon made them just over $3.00 each (over 50% off). I eat a lot of almonds.
It depends on how many inserts, as to how many papers I buy. What coupons I don’t use, I take to work & give to co workers. I just wish those would do the same, but that’s ok.
I buy two papers per week. Orlando sentinnel doesn’t seem to give good deals unless it’s a new subscription. I am a family of 4 with 2 very picky people (son who is 1 and husband who can’t eat alot of things that are normally on sale)
I usually buy 2 papers – the Sunday paper in the Providence area is $3.00 so buying 6 or 10 papers per week is crazy money!
I used to purchase two. But then, my local paper started offering the coupon inserts for free home delivery. As good as this sounds, their system is flawed- it comes to my house on a Saturday (which is nice because I can plan ahead & see sales early) but not every insert or ad is in it. I still end up buying at least one paper so I can have everything but I end up with one of one insert and two of the other. Also, our local Sunday paper costs TWO dollars now so I’m not able to but more than one most weeks anyway.
I buy 4 papers for a family of three. However I cook for several elderly people, contribute to the church pantry, share coupons etc. I also pickup friends papers for recycling for the school and they give me their coupons!
