What a week we’ve had! This past weekend my brother was in town and we spent many hours with him swimming and eating and then swimming some more. Asher went to bed late all weekend and this week he’s been compensating for that by sleeping in every morning. Nope. I’m not complaining!
This Tuesday, August 19th also marked Family Day for us. It was one full year since Asher and I arrived in the states after traveling for 30+ hours across the globe. August 19th, one year ago, we were reunited with my hubby (he met us in Washington DC to fly home with us during our last flight) and we officially became a family of 3 in the U.S. This past year flew by. It’s funny. Those first couple of months were rough. Really rough. But looking back, I can barely remember the difficulty of it. I just see Asher taking his first steps and then almost immediately learning to run, getting his first tooth, speaking his first words, speaking his first phrases, singing his first songs, laughing for the first time unprompted after realizing he could scare the dog by pushing a box towards him, running around giggling as daddy chases him, getting messy as he eats with a fork by himself, asking for a kiss when he gets an “owie”, the list goes on and on. It has been an amazing year. We celebrated with Ethiopian Food from the restaurant Queen of Sheba, a cake and dressing Asher in a traditional Ethiopian outfit. Knowing that adoption does come with so much loss, someday Asher may not want to celebrate Family Day (I hope this isn’t the case – but it will be his decision). But for now, we will celebrate it with cake and food and thank God that we are able to be a family of three.
Dinner was Ethiopian food complete with injera. Asher loved it as did we.

And now back to this week’s Photo Show & Tell. This week’s shopping trip was thrown together in about a half hour. Hubby and I had just put Asher to bed and it was getting late. So we threw coupons together and Jeff ran to the store and quickly got everything as the store closed. We will be going back for more Planters Peanuts and for more GoGo Pouches. We also had rainchecks for the Sparkle paper towels and for the Jif/Ziploc deal. So you won’t be able to do those deals unless you have rainchecks.
Please remember that you do not see any chicken or ground beef purchased because we have stocked up on boneless, skinless chicken breasts and ground beef with Zaycon Foods. **Right now Zaycon Foods is taking reservations for their upcoming Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast Events and Lean Ground Beef Events!

Obviously every child is different, but my Scotty loves hearing about his Vietnamese heritage. We have a book titled “When you were born in Vietnam” that he loves to have read to him. Starting next weekend, he will be in weekly Vietnamese language and culture lessons at the Vietnamese church in Largo. I hope that Asher will appreciate his heritage as well as his adopted country.

What an awesome opportunity for your son, Kathy! I think it is so important for us to honor the heritage of our boys and I love everything you are doing for Scotty! We have lot of pictures, drawings and even toys that we brought back from Ethiopia. If you ask Asher where he is from, he will say “Eeeee” for Ethiopia 🙂 My husband goes to Africa pretty much once a year and once Asher is older, we’ll bring him back and I can’t wait for that day. I hope Scotty’s classes go well!

Happy Family Day! I love when you share pictures he’s just adorable.
I got the mint chocolate Flipz too! So excited to crack them open (:
Addicted to Saving says
Thank you Katie! Be careful! Once you open your Flipz, you might not be able to close them 🙂 I may or may not have had a handful for breakfast this morning…

Wow, it doesn’t seem like it’s been a year already. Time really does fly. But congrats to your family. Asher is growing into such a cutie. And amen on those Flipz. I’m addicted to the white fudge. Holy cow I can a whole canister myself.
Addicted to Saving says
My husband thinks the white fudge is better than mint. I disagree but that leaves us each with our own canisters since we got one of each. lol. We may have to go back for more 😉
Vicki Powell says
Can’t believe its been a year since you brought Asher home. Thank you for sharing him with us. He is adorable. Thank you for everything you and Jeff do for the site. I appreciate you.

Thank you for your kind words Vicki! I know you have followed our entire journey and it has felt so good knowing that you were cheering us on! 🙂

I think it’s just awesome you are incorporating Asher’s heritage into not only his life, but yours as well. You didn’t just serve him Ethiopian food, you ate it too! My adoptive parents didn’t have the foresight to do this for me, and I think it would have changed a lot for me. Kudos!
Addicted to Saving says
Thank you for the kind words Maria! We are in love with everything Ethiopian because without Ethiopia, we wouldn’t have our son. And their food is awesome 🙂 If you have any tips or thoughts on how we can raise our son and honor his heritage, please email me. (Or if you have blogged about it, please email me your links) Adoption is an amazing thing. BUT, I know that my son has had to experience great loss in order for him to be adopted. We want to parent him in a way that honors his loss (family, culture, etc). I’ve done a lot of research on this, but if you have any personal experiences or thoughts, I would great appreciate hearing them.
