Update – I wanted to repost this today since this post was so popular yesterday with all of the Publix shoppers out there. I would love to hear your thoughts on the changes – leave a comment and let me know what you think!
I just got word from my blogger friend Amy that Publix will be changing their coupon policy starting in October. While Publix allows each store a lot of leeway in interpreting the company policy on coupons, we can expect that all stores will be affected by this change at some point. Please note that this is *NOT* official yet, and we will all need to wait until the official announcement comes to get 100% certainty.
However, until then, here are some of the changes you can expect to see. The new policy will supposedly be implemented on 10/1, with a grace period given until 10/18 to allow for shoppers to be educated on the changes.
If I can be honest with you, most of these changes will not even affect me. They are limited dollar off coupons (like our $5/$40 Publix or $5/$50 Winn Dixie coupons) to one per household per day, and that will be my biggest adjustment. Otherwise, I think it’s good that they are limiting us to 8 of the same coupons per day. This will drastically reduce shelf-clearing when there are free items to be had, and that’s a good thing imho.
Let me what you think about the new policy after you’ve had a chance to read over it below!
New Publix Coupon Policy includes:
- We only accept coupons on identical items we sell.
- We accept a manufacturer and either a Publix store coupon or competitor coupon on the same item. Maximum 2 coupons per item.
- Manufacturer digital offers cannot be combined with manufacturer paper coupons on the purchase of the same item.
- We do not accept percentage off items or percentage off total order coupons.
- We do not accept coupons that Publix determines to be printed incorrectly. For example, a coupon missing a size requirement or other standard coupon details.
- We do not accept coupons presented via a mobile phone or device.
- We do not accept coupons that appear to be copied. All coupons must be originals.
- For BOGO offers, each item is considered a separate purchase.
- We limit coupon redemption to eight of the same coupons per day per household.
- Managers approval is needed for individual coupons above $5.
- Dollar off coupons will be limited to one Publix coupon per day per household. The total order before coupon must be equal to or greater than combined purchase requirement indicated on the coupons presented. We consider competitor coupons for a dollar off groups of items to be dollar off total order coupons and will only allow one per day per household.
- Money due back to the customer at the end of the transaction involving coupons will only be provided on a Publix gift card.
New Rain Check Policy:
- We will only issue one rain check per day per household for an item.
- We will not issue rain checks for Publix, manufacturer or competitor coupons

Notice it says the “dollar off” coupons are Publix coupons not competitor coupons. My Publix stopped accepting the Winn Dixie $5/$30 this week. I guess they are already implementing the new policy. I think all the shelf clearing has hurt those of us who only get 2 deals and are not creating a huge stockpile.
Susan says
After reading further it does meantion competitor “dollar off” coupons but my Publix has stopped taking them. I guess they can make their own decision and to be fair I don’t have a Winn Dixie close by.

I saw that, too. In one line it’s Publix only, in the next it can be competitor. Why can’t they make it clear?
Doug W says
Another blogger made more sense: Dollars-off-total-order coupons will be limited to one Publix and one competitor’s coupon per day, per household. The total order before coupons must be equal to or greater than the combined purchase requirements indicated on the coupon(s) presented.

My publix still accepts the $$ off total order coupons – depending upon who they consider a competitor. I never had a winn-dixie but I had no trouble with a target $$ off total coupon.
Amy says
I find it interesting that they will not accept any coupons on mobile devices, yet before I swipe my card at Publix, the machine asks for my mobile number so they can sign me up for electronic coupons.
Ruth says
I think they are 2 different coupons. yes, there’s Publix coupons added to that number for one time use. Then there are some people who don’t carry flyers with them, but carry the ads on their phone and just show the phone to the cashier and they might not even be current.

Publix does not automatically enroll customers in their ‘digital coupon’ program, when you enter your phone number in the POS machine. You must visit the Publix website to create an account, so you can clip the coupons you want to use in future visits. When you enter your phone number in the POS machine it links the items you’re purchasing to the appropriate “clipped” digital coupons.

“We do not accept coupons presented via a mobile phone or device.” … That’s really 20th century and surprises me. There’s no reason they can’t scan a barcode from a phone. And although 7-Eleven isn’t exactly a Publix competitor, they have embraced completely the opposite policy. They run specials exclusively via their app that necessitates the cashier scanning your phone.

How do you interpret “We only accept coupons on identical items we sell.” For example, I use the Market Pantry frozen fruit printed coupons to buy Publix brand frozen fruit. Will that not longer be allowed?
Addicted to Saving says
Hi Shannon! My interpretation is that no, it will no longer be allowed since they are different brands.

Our Publix stopped accepting “Market Pantry” over a year ago….it was a sad day!

I’m in Central Florida and the Publix in our area can determine which competitor coupons they accept based on what their nearest competition is. The Publix I use accepts Target and Winn Dixie coupons. Hoping they continue to do this since I love using the Winn Dixie coupon (I have never used more than one during a shopping trip no matter what my order totaled and I only grocery shop once per week). I use a lot of Target coupons including Target Brand for Publix Brand…guess I will have to get clarification from our store manager since I think this is also left up to the store. I do know when they accept a competitors coupon there are eating the total value of the coupon so I can understand their concerns with them.
Diane says
I the entering of a phone number (can be cell or land) to use the Publix digital coupons, they really encourage it since Publix is getting a benefit for using the coupons.com site to those per my store manager. I know lots of people use Ibotta and other site, they aren’t going to like that change. I guess not being much of a cell phone person I never used them so I won’t miss them.

I’m in central Florida also ! And my Publix they have there own rules. Like in this area there is Winn Dixie so they will take the competitor coupons. So it makes it hard. I’m still new at the couponing. I’ve been doing some of my couponing at Wal-Mart causes my Wal-Mart takes Walgreens ad , and Cvs pharmacy ad and Target competition ads. Is there someone out there tell me about vitamins on sale ? Before we know it these grocery stores will be like how Walgreens . Like everybody else I’m trying to save money.

I WENT TO PLIX IN FT LAUDERDALE ON 17TH STREET AND THEY WOULD ONLY TAKE 8 COUPONS, THISTOTALLY THREW OF MY SHOPPING TRIP. I THOUGHT THE POLICY STATED ONLY USE 8 OUPONOTHE SAME PRDUCT PER DAY. PLEASE VERIFY.
Addicted to Saving says
Wait, 8 TOTAL coupons? That is definitely not right! It is 8 of the same coupons per day, just as you said. I would definitely go back to them, kindly, and show them their own policy. 🙂 https://www.publix.com/savings/coupons/coupon-policy
