Did you watch a lot of Disney movies growing up as a kid? Hubby jokes with me because I rarely watched anything but nature shows on PBS and Disney movies when I was little. This would explain my love for animals now, as well as the white-picket-fence fairytale I had in my mind of my life as a wife, mother, etc.
While I still love animals, and that will never change, I have grown to realize that “grown-up life” is not a fairytale. I’ve experienced a lot of pain and heartache in my life, the most recent of which I’ve written about HERE. And while I’ve come to see that the Disney stories I loved as a kid are just that – fairytales – I also hold great respect for one character in particular: the Beauty, Belle.
You remember Belle. The bookworm beauty who loved her father enough to sacrifice her own desires for the good of her father’s, becoming a prisoner of the ghastly Beast, the once-handsome prince. Yet even in her sacrifice, she still dreamed of her Prince Charming. And ultimately she was able to see that Prince Charming in reality is never what he is in our fairytales.
I love Belle because she was able to see beyond the outward appearance and looked at the Beast’s inward heart. So many times we as women are caught up with our own appearances, and criticize the appearances of others. And while we will probably always be tempted to do so this side of heaven, Belle is the type of characther who inspires me to go beyond the rough exterior of a person and value them for their inner person.
So what about you? What fairytale character inspires you?
